Casebreak [for Detectives Hayes and Benson]

Midtown West
Friday, December 3
8:30AM

The apartment building was busy with the sounds of people getting ready for the day - a blowdryer running on the third floor, a microwave whirring on the second, parents rushing their children out the door, a suit shouting on his cell phone as he left the elevator.

The fourth floor was no different - same mundane, everyday noises just like the six other floors. Until the bloodcurdling scream rang out.

It was followed half a minute later by cries of, "Oh, god! Oh, god!" as Jillian Goldberg flung open the door of Apartment 4B.

"Help!" she yelled out, her voice breaking. "Someone call the police!"

Cole had been going about his normal morning routine, though he was running a little behind. He tugged on his shoes and was starting to button his shirt when he heard someone yell for police. He grabbed his gun and his badge, rushing out the door and toward the voice, shirt only half buttoned up.
"Please, someone get the police!" Jillian called out again, looking around wildly. She was a brunette in her mid-20s, smartly dressed in gray slacks and a blue blouse, her peacoat on but unbuttoned.
Cole flashed his badge,"Ma'am, what's going on?" He looked her over for any signs of injury. "Are you alright?"
Jillian saw Cole's badge and started to cry, putting her hands up to her face. "She's dead. She's-she-"
"Stay here ma'am. I'll be right back,"Cole started to edge into the apartment his gun ready. He stepped inside the door and looked around.
The layout of the apartment was like the other single-bedrooms in the building - entrance leading into the living room, which was connected to a small kitchen, plus the bathroom and bedroom off of a hallway to the left side. The furniture was old, but in good condition. The place was messy in that the occupant was usually too busy to do much when she got home besides leave a trail of clothes, magazines, etc.

He let his eyes scan for any signs of trouble making his way back through the apartment. He stopped looking into the little kitchen before continuing down the hall. Cole moved quietly, checking the bathroom for a body or any sign of the killer. Once he was sure the room was clear he turned and stepped into the bedroom.
The bedroom, unlike the rest of the apartment, was turned entirely upside down - drawers were pulled out and things from the bureau were thrown about. In the center of the bed, amidst tangled sheets, was the nude body of Marissa Hobson, the apartment's tenant. Her wrists were bound with cloth restraints, which were in turn tied to the bedposts.

Cole grabbed his phone from his pocket on the way down the hall. He punched in Van Buren's number letting the phone ring.
At the 27th precinct, in her office, the lieutenant answered. "Van Buren."
"Lieutenant, it's Hayes. The homicide that I'm on it's turned into an SVU case but I want to stay on it."
Van Buren thought about this a moment. "I think we can spare you for a bit. I'll call Donnie Cragen, let him know he should only send one of his guys on over to the scene."
"Thanks Lieutenant,"he nodded even though she couldn't see him more of a habit than anything.
After hanging up, Van Buren got on the phone with Don Cragen. A few minutes later, Cragen poked his head out his office door, looking into the SVU bullpen.

"Benson," he called out, "My office!"
Olivia got up and stepped into Cragen's office. "Yeah, boss?" she said
"There's a case that one of the guys from the 2-7 just caught - body was found in his apartment building," Cragen began explaining, "M.E. thinks the vic was raped before she was killed. Van Buren's guy, Hayes, still wants in on it -- his building and all that. I told her okay, but that he's to be partnered with one of you. Lanier and Munch are out in Red Hook, Fin's in Washington Heights...so it's your lucky day."

Olivia showed up at the crime scene and flashed her badge to the uniforms outside to get in. She looked around and saw what never got easier - a sexual victim's crime scene.

"I'm looking for Hayes," she said to the room. "I'm Detective Olivia Benson, SVU."
Cole turned at hearing his name,"I'm Hayes." He looked only partially ready. His shirt not fully buttoned and no jacket on.
She looked him over and could see he clearly had a rough start to the day. Nothing like murder in your own building to wake you up in the morning.

"So any idea what happened here?"
"Possible suffocation. Rodgers thinks she's been dead a couple of days."
"And of course we won't know til the autopsy." Olivia looked around the room, which was buzzing with techs processing the scene.
"Did the vic live alone?"
"Looks like it," a CSU tech named Kenny Barnes said, coming over with a pile of envelopes. "All the mail's addressed only to her. Name's Marissa Hobson, according to these."

"Yeah, just found her purse," another tech, Julia Ruiz, said, stepping out of the closet. "Well, one of them - one she was using at the time of her death it looks like. Driver's license, credit cards...uh-oh."

"What?" Barnes asked.
Ruiz held up a laminated badge that was attached to a lanyard. "Press pass."
He nodded listening to what the tech said,"That is an uh-oh."

Cole turned toward Olivia,"A single woman working for the press."
"Can I see her purse please?" she said to Ruiz, and then thanked her when she handed it over.

"Oh no. That's definitely a bad thing."

Then she said to Cole, "Do we know if anyone filed a missing person's report? You'd think working for the press, someone should have noticed she wasn't showing up unwelcomed or otherwise," Olivia said. Thinking to herself she realized that if she worked for a certain person at Ledger, WWIII could have broken out and he wouldn't have noticed. "We'll have to check on that."
"Haven't checked for a missing person's report yet but surely her boss knew that she was missing. The woman that found the body and whose screams brought me running is with a uniform,"he nodded his head toward the door.

"I don't know what her relationship to the vic is yet,"he looked at Olivia.
