OOC: Thank you to Cassie for the quick beta. <3 Please let me know what you guys think. :)

Monday 1st February

Spending the morning at a crime scene did nothing to Alex Eames except restore her faith in the failure of humanity, especially when the crime itself was so horrific that even she was going to have trouble sleeping that night. Normally she would focus all her energy on the case itself, but sometimes it was easier said than done. It wasn't just this new case that weighed on her mind. It was also the Caspers case that hadn't exactly ended on a positive note (and that was an understatement). But she had enjoyed working with Zach Nichols. She had found his work method to be a little unusual but she wasn't a stranger to that, and they seemed to get along like a house on fire.

Alex pushed the chair away from her desk and grabbed her coat. Taking one look at her partner, she sighed. He was clearly somewhere other than here, judging by the glazed over look in his eyes. She doubted he had even heard her move, which was unlike him. Well, if she gave that some thought, that wasn't strictly true - lately that was exactly how he was. She had to remind him she was there, and sometimes she doubted he really was paying any attention at all until he managed to pull himself together. He seemed to be deep in thought, on what she had thought was case related, but she wasn't so sure anymore.

"Hey," she called out as she pulled her coat over her shoulders. "We've got a few witnesses to speak to..." she trailed off, realising she didn't have much of an audience. "Goren? Bobby?" she tried again.

That seemed to work because he turned to look at her, blinking up at her with a frown aimed at himself. "Sorry, Eames."

"Yeah," she paused, "What's going on?"

"Just thinking," he gave her a little facial shrug as if that was supposed to be all the explanation she would need.

Alex let out a small sound of amusement. She would be shocked if he wasn't thinking. "About...?" she tried to prompt him.

He seemed to hesitate, studying her for a moment and then shaking his head. She wasn't sure what that meant. Just as she was about to ask, he opened his mouth and interrupted her, "I've been thinking about resigning, actually."

That statement caused her to freeze on the spot. Goren resigning had not been anywhere on her list of possible causes or problems. Actually she just hadn't considered it, period. She walked back to her desk, slowly, and pressed the tip of her index finger against the surface. "How far into this thinking are you?" She asked, tentatively. She was almost afraid of the answer.

Bobby took a deep breath and then purposely looked at the small envelope on his desk. "Far enough," he told her, honestly. Funny, this was actually harder than he thought it would be. This wasn't like quitting your day job at the local fast food franchise, or suddenly deciding you want to be a singer instead of an actor. This involved someone else, and it would change things for her, too. But none of that was a reason to stay.

"You said that this year was a fresh start, right?" He started to explain. She nodded. "That's what it is."

Alex sighed. "What will you do?"

Bobby laughed, though he didn't sound all that amused. "I don't know... I have options--private investigation, looking at older cases, you know, criminal profiling..."

"Looking for your nephew?"

He stared at her and then nodded, "Yeah."

With her arms folded, she studied him for a moment before she nodded towards Ross' office. "He's in now..." Bobby wasn't sure but it seemed like she was daring him to do it, testing to see how much he really wanted it and how far he was willing to go.

He slowly nodded at her and then pulled away from his desk.

She watched him as he informed their Captain, handed over his typed up letter of resignation. She watched but she wasn't really paying attention. Thinking over it, she probably could've seen it coming if she hadn't been so caught up in her own problems. But he had been on the edge for long enough of a time that it could've ended in a much different place. She figured this was the better way to go. He would get to leave without a giant black mark against his badge or one more rumour about his mental state. He would get his fresh start.

Alex shook herself out of her thoughts when he returned, he picked up his own coat. Yes, they would still have two weeks to work together.

She took the opportunity to cover it all up before any of the soap-like mush could begin, and she smirked. "Don't think this puts you in the driver's seat, that's still mine." She picked up the car keys and made her way out of the squadroom.
